TOMS RIVER – The Toms River Police Department is reminding residents to lock their vehicles as an increase in car thefts have occurred in the area.

Suspects in a silver Audi, allegedly stolen out of Clifton, attempted to steal a car on Todd Road Wednesday afternoon. At the time, the owner was inside the car and startled the suspect who quickly fled the area. Afterwards, the suspects attempted more auto thefts in Wall Township, police said.

Police Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina said the car was likely targeted due to the position of the mirrors, which indicated it was unlocked.

“Please remember to lock your doors 24 hours of the day as New Jersey is experiences a surge in auto thefts. There have been over 700 reported vehicle thefts in NJ in 2022,” Messina said.
