OCEAN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFERING
H1N1 VACCINATION CLINIC AT THE RITACCO
CENTER ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 24TH (Updated
Jan. 19 2010)
“The Ocean County Health
Department (OCHD) will be offering injectable
and intranasal H1N1 vaccine, seasonal
flu and pneumonia vaccine to Ocean County
residents next Sunday, January 24th,
from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Ritacco
Center, 1245 Old Freehold Road, Toms
River. H1N1 vaccinations are available
to anyone over the age of 6 months.
Appointments are preferred by calling
732-341-9700, ext. 7502, but walk-ins
are accepted. There is no cost for the
H1N1 vaccine. The flu and the pneumonia
shot are free if enrolled in Medicare
Part B. If not enrolled in Medicare
Part B of if you have a Medicare Managed
Care Plan, the cost will be $20.00.
If you are requesting a pneumonia shot
and are under the age of 65 years, a
note from your physician is required.
New Jersey is now considered to have
“regional” H1N1 activity,
which was recently changed from “widespread”
activity. Although less flu activity
is being seen in schools and hospitals,
both are still being monitored closely
for admissions and absenteeism. As pandemics,
through history, are known to come in
waves, it is expected that H1N1 activity
may return. With this in mind and vaccine
now plentiful, this is the perfect opportunity
to get vaccinated and develop immunity
before H1N1 returns, said Leslie Terjesen,
OCHD Public Information Officer.
Daniel Regenye, Assistant Public Health
Coordinator, said, “The intranasal
vaccine is for those from ages 2 –
49 years, not pregnant, with no chronic
underlying conditions nor do they have
close contact with someone with a severely
compromised immune system. It is an
easy vaccine to administer to healthy
children as it is inserted in each nostril.”
Freeholder Gerry P. Little, liaison
to the OCHD, said, “Since the
Health Department has vaccine and there
is to be a decrease in flu-like activity,
this is the perfect time to get immunized
before we see flu-like activity increase.”
Although anyone over the age of 6 months
can be vaccinated, priority groups identified
by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention are still recommended to
get the H1N1
vaccine, which include:
• Pregnant women
• Household contacts and caregivers
for children younger than 6 months of
age
• Healthcare and emergency medical
services personnel
• All people from 6 months through
24 years of age
• Persons aged 25 through 64 years
who have health conditions associated
chronic
health care issues or a compromised
immune system
If you have questions regarding H1N1,
you can call the New Jersey H1N1 Hotline
at 1- 866-321-9571 or the Ocean County
Health Department at 732-341-9700, ext.
7791. Clinics are also posted on the
OCHD website at www.ochd.org.

OCEAN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFERING
H1N1 VACCINATION CLINICS AT THE HEALTH
DEPARTMENT THROUGH THE MONTH OF JANUARY
(Updated 12/28)
“The Ocean County Health
Department (OCHD) will be offering injectable
and intranasal H1N1 vaccine to Ocean
County residents every Monday afternoon
from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesday
morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. throughout
the month of January,” stated
Ella Boyd, VMD, OCHD Public Health Coordinator.
She continued, “As the New Jersey
Department of Health and Senior Services
have lifted the restrictions of who
can be vaccinated, anybody who would
like to be vaccinated against H1N1 can
certainly do so. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention still
recommends that the people in the priority
groups get
vaccinated, which include:
• Pregnant women
• Household contacts and caregivers
for children younger than 6 months of
age
• Healthcare and emergency medical
services personnel
• All people from 6 months through
24 years of age
• Persons aged 25 through 64 years
who have health conditions associated
chronic
health care issues or a compromised
immune system
While there is less flu activity being
seen in schools and hospitals, New Jersey
is still considered to have wide-spread
H1N1 activity. As pandemics, through
history, are known to come in waves,
it is expected that H1N1 activity may
increase in the new year.” Daniel
Regenye, Assistant Public Health Coordinator,
said, “The intranasal vaccine
is for those from ages 2 – 49
years, with no chronic underlying conditions
nor do they have close contact with
someone with a severely compromised
immune system. It is safe and easy vaccine
to administer to healthy children as
it is inserted in each nostril. It is
also one of the vaccines that have been
widely dispensed to college campuses.”
Freeholder Deputy Director Gerry P.
Little, liaison to the OCHD, said, “Since
the Health Department has vaccine and
there seems to be a decrease in flu-like
activity, this is the perfect time to
get immunized before we see flu-like
activity increase. Take advantage of
the OCHD clinics, especially college
students who may be home for the holidays,
and get your vaccination now so you
can build up immunity before another
wave of H1N1 may be seen in the community.”
Although walk-ins are accepted, appointments
can be made by calling 732-341-9700,
ext. 7502. If you have questions regarding
H1N1, you can call the New Jersey H1N1
Hotline at 1-866-321-9571 or the Ocean
County Health Department at 732-341-9700,
ext. 7791.

NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND
SENIOR SERVICES OPENS H1N1 VACCINATIONS
TO THE
GENERAL PUBLIC (Updated Dec. 17th)
The New Jersey Department of
Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS)
notified H1N1 vaccine providers yesterday
that they may offer the H1N1 vaccine
to anyone who wishes to get the vaccine.
NJDHSS made this decision based on several
factors, including the amount of vaccine
that the state has received has increased
to 2.25 million doses and that the H1N1
vaccine demand among individuals within
target groups has decreased. In addition,
the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) recently recommended
that states consider increasing vaccine
access to the general public. The CDC
has projected that there will be enough
vaccine
for all who wish to receive it.
Freeholder Deputy Director Gerry P.
Little, Liaison to the Ocean County
Health Department (OCHD), said that
the OCHD has held 19 H1N1 vaccination
clinics, including both injectable and
intranasal flu mist, from the time it
first received vaccine in October. Clinics
have been held at both the Health Department
and at school sites throughout all of
Ocean County for easier access to the
vaccinations by residents. Little stated,
“The OCHD has given 10,426 injectable
vaccinations and 951 intranasal vaccinations,
totaling 11,377. The OCHD followed
the CDC priority groups and still have
the option to schedule clinics specifically
for individuals in target groups at
greatest risk of complications from
H1N1.”
Daniel Regenye, OCHD Assistant Public
Health Coordinator, said that administrators
and staff at the OCHD will be participating
in a teleconference with the NJDHSS
today regarding the expansion of the
vaccine guidelines. Regenye stated,
“We have been in touch with providers
who registered with the NJDHSS to be
vaccinators and have offered vaccine
to them. Our staff continues to meet
internally and with schools, etc. that
have offered to be vaccination sites
to determine dates, etc. to offer this
vaccine to the public. Once regional
H1N1 public clinic dates are established,
they will be distributed to the media
and posted on our website.

priority populations and the best way
to reach these populations.”

Little said, “The Health Department
has been
working above and beyond to get our

County, the Health Department will continue
its planning of
clinics to offer this vaccine to our

OCEAN COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT MOVES
FORWARD TO INNOCULATE AGAINST H1N1 WITH
LIMITED SUPPLY OF VACCINE (10/27)
The Ocean County Health Department
(OCHD) is continuing its proactive steps
to
protect Ocean County residents by scheduling
continuing H1N1 clinics. Within days
of its first
small shipment, 5 clinics were set for
the highest priority groups. Beginning
this week, 2 walkin
clinics were scheduled for injectable
vaccine for priority groups.
Although the Ocean County Health Department
has an additional order of 10,000 doses
ordered, orders are being filled only
as the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC)
receive vaccine from the manufacturers.
As the vaccine is received at the Ocean
County Health
Department, clinics will be arranged
immediately and the general public notified
of times, dates
and priority groups through ads, the
media and at the OCHD website at www.ochd.org.
The
OCHD is in constant communication with
the New Jersey Department of Health
and Senior
Services regarding shipment of vaccine
to assure the OCHD order is filled as
quickly as possible.
The U. S. Department of Health and Human
Services stated that although 40 million
doses were expected by this time, by
last Friday only 16.1 million doses
have been distributed
throughout the United States.* By December,
the CDC should receive a total of 150
million
doses, which according to the Federal
Government, will be enough doses for
those needing or
wishing to be vaccinated.
The Ocean County Health Department will
continue to advise both the media and
schools
on clinic times and dates. If you have
any questions regarding clinics, please
call 732-341-9700,
ext. 7502 or the New Jersey State H1N1
